Working Android Marshmallow (6.0) for Nexus 7 (2012) – Update 2

In my blog post from Sep. 2015 (Speeding up Nexus 7 (2012) Tablet after Lollipop upgrade) I evaluated several options to get the Nexus up to speed again even with Android 5 (Lollipop).

But even with the changes in place I still got a lot of lag and unresponsive apps. I considered a downgrade to 4.4 when I noticed that there is a Android M Firmware for the Nexus 7 on XDA-Developers.

Stalled connections using SCP/SFTP/SSH with large files through VPN connections

Sometimes you have to push data using SCP/SFTP/SSH via a VPN connection on a customer server. Especially if Cisco VPN hardware is being used and the files are large, the transfer sometimes is stalled and fails even. This also happens with other hardware as well and may be because of a poor implementation of SACK. It might help to switch SACK of in the kernel network stack.

Raspberry Pi as Slideshow / Digital Signage Server

Because of its lean and fan less design the Raspberry Pi is a perfect piece of hardware to create a simple slideshow system or so called Digital Signage Server (DSS). Perfect to drive a LCD somewhere to teaser the latest offers or new products.

Speeding up Nexus 7 (2012) Tablet after Lollipop upgrade – Update

The Nexus 7 (2012) received the Android Lollipop firmware a while ago. Sometimes the tablet became very slow or even unresponsive. The following measures might help revert those issues. That topic is already covered quite thoroughly by lots of other blogs and websites. Still, I wanted to write down the actions that helped me bringing back my Nexus 7, even if it’s just for private documentation purposes.

First movie trailer of book adaptation “The Martian” written by Andy Weir – Update 2

The book “The Martian” written by Andy Weir was one of the best books I’ve read in quite a while. It is Andys first novell and was first published one chapter at a time on his website. Only after that it was release as an ebook and finally published.

Due to the overwhelming feedback Twentieth Century Fox optioned the film rights. The Movie “The Martian” will be released end 2015 and first trailer was just released.

Installing PHP7 Beta 1 as php-fpm variant on a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS system.

After major parts of the PHP community were against releasing PHP6 as the successor of PHP5, the new official replacement of PHP5 will now be PHP7. A first beta version is now available and the final release is planned on October 2015. Because there are no official packages to be installed for Debian or Ubuntu at the moment, we’ll create a PHP 7 php-fpm module by compiling the beta 1 source code. That will also allow us to continue having PHP5 on our server as the main version but use PHP7 to test our projects for compatibility.

How to mount a encrypted drive from a ISP backupserver using encfs and autofs. (update)

ISPs often offer external disk space, together with their server packages, to store several GB of data for backups. Usually this storage space can be accessed via ftp/sftp , nfs or cifs (Samba / Windows shared folder). But that usually means that our data is stored unencrypted on an external server we don’t control.

But there is quite an elegant solution to this using autofs and encfs to automount and encryt that storage space.
